Chelsea break unwanted club record during humiliating 5-0 defeat to Arsenal

Former Arsenal players Kai Havertz and Ben White scored braces after Leandro Trossard gave the Gunners an early lead at Emirates Stadium. Following an incredible eight-game unbeaten streak, Chelsea lost their second successive defeat in Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City at Wembley Stadium.

It was a night to forget for Chelsea, and the defeat was the worst they’d ever suffered against Arsenal. However, the devastating defeat also saw Mauricio Pochettino’s team make unwanted history. They have never conceded more than 57 goals in a single Premier League season. The Blues still have six games left in the Premier League, where they are now ranked ninth.

Chelsea shipped 47 Premier League goals in a dreadful 2022/23 season, and their defensive numbers are a far cry from the 15 strikes they allowed in the 2004/05 title win under Jose Mourinho.

Havertz, meanwhile, had a historic night against his former employers. The German international, who spent three seasons at Chelsea before joining Arsenal for £65 million, celebrated both of his goals in the second half. That apparently irritated Chelsea’s social media administrator, as his name was not mentioned in the score update tweets.

Instead, they just said “Goal” on both instances.

Havertz has become the only player to play for Chelsea and then score twice against them. Arsenal, who are now three points ahead of Liverpool at the top of the league, face their North London rivals Tottenham on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Chelsea hopes to return to winning ways with a difficult trip to high-flying Aston Villa on Saturday night.
