Paula Badosa, Carlos Alcaraz, Ons Jabeur, and others have responded to Garbine Muguruza’s retirement.Muguruza opted to take a lengthy vacation from tennis after a poor start to the 2023 season, in which she lost four consecutive matches. She did not explain when she would return. The former WTA World No. 1 was asked about her comeback earlier this year, but she indicated she had no plans to return.
The two-time Grand Slam winner announced her retirement during a press conference in Madrid. “I wanted to tell you that it’s time to say goodbye. It’s been a long and glorious career. A career rich of anecdotes and memories. I could talk about so many of them, but I believe it is time for me to retire and begin a new chapter,” Muguruza stated.
Following the 30-year-old’s declaration, she received several farewell notes on social media. Paula Badosa paid a heartfelt homage to the Spanish-Venezuelan, emphasizing Muguruza’s influence in influencing her career and Spanish tennis in general. “You’ve been my mirror since I was a child. Thank you so much, Garbi, for your contributions to Spanish tennis. It was a pleasure to spend these years with you. “Have a happy life; you deserve it,” Badosa commented on X (previously Twitter).
Carlos Alcaraz also chipped in, encouraging Muguruza to enjoy her retirement after a successful career. “Congratulations on your amazing career! “Enjoy everything that comes now,” Alcaraz wrote.
Ons Jabeur, Elina Svitolina, and Barbora Strycova all congratulated the 30-year-old. “Congrats on an amazing career,” Jabeur commented on Instagram. “Congrats!!! “All the best for the next chapter,” Svitolina said. “Congrats, Garbine!! Strycova wrote, “What a career you had.”
Last but not least, Simona Halep said farewell to Muguruza. “Wishing you all the best and congratulations on your wonderful career,” Halep wrote on Instagram.
