Man City face looming £100m transfer deadline

Manchester City have just a few days to cash in on Bruno Guimaraes’ Newcastle United release clause. City are reportedly interested in the Brazil international, who is on Copa America duty with his country this summer. He is said to have a £100 million release clause in his contract, which City may consider excessive, but it expires this month.

Following that, Newcastle would be in a strong position to reject any offers, and with the midfielder not expressing a desire to go, a deal may be difficult to complete if City made concrete efforts. According to the Newcastle Chronicle, clubs have until Monday, June 24, to meet a £100 million release clause in Guimaraes’ contract from last year. It means City will need to act soon if they want to make a decisive play for the 26-year-old.

The Magpies want to keep one of their key players, and manager Eddie Howe stated regarding the release clause last month: “Having that [cut-off point] was well planned and structured in the sense that there is a finish point.” We do not want a summer of conjecture. I don’t believe that would be good for the player or us.”

The Blues may aim to strengthen this summer, despite a crowded fixture schedule due to the increased Champions League and Club World Cup. But there is no fear at the Etihad, with manager Pep Guardiola at ease working with a smaller group, as four consecutive Premier League wins and a 2023 Treble demonstrate the quality within. Ederson, Bernardo Silva, and Kevin De Bruyne’s futures are uncertain, while Kalvin Phillips could leave following a difficult stint at the Etihad. Selling Matheus Nunes barely 12 months after his arrival cannot be ruled out.
