Man City handed imminent title boost as Arsenal learn fate after Tottenham defeat

Manchester City will travel to Tottenham this month, knowing that Spurs have taken a significant step back in their quest for Champions League qualifying after losing 2-0 to Chelsea this week. Spurs’ hopes of finishing fourth were dashed with their defeat in the London derby at Stamford Bridge. Mauricio Pochettino’s team won again, with Trevoh Chalobah and Nicolas Jackson scoring for the hosts. Pep Guardiola’s team will travel to north London on Tuesday (May 14), for yet another must-win game in their quest for the Premier League crown. It has been a dreadful fixture for City since their’move’ to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2019.

Their 1-0 FA Cup fourth-round triumph earlier this year marked not only their first victory in the new stadium, but also their first (and still only) goal. Only one point separates City from leaders Arsenal, who will hope rival Spurs can dent City’s title chances.

However, a team battling for something is a greater test than one ‘on the beach’, and Spurs may face more of the latter, given their six-point lead over sixth-placed Manchester United. Given the current seven-point margin to Villa, Tottenham’s victory over City on the penultimate weekend of the league season is unlikely to change things around.

Arsenal’s remaining games are against Bournemouth, United, and Everton on the final day. Liverpool, however, suffered a crushing defeat to Everton and a draw against West Ham, ending their title hopes. Jurgen Klopp’s club is five points ahead of Arsenal and four behind City, with final games against Wolves, Fulham, Spurs, and West Ham. After being knocked out of the Champions League quarterfinals, City will not win back-to-back trebles, but they may still win the Premier League and the FA Cup.
